Founded by the Theban general Epaminondas in 369 B.C. after he had defeated Sparta at the battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, Messinia was home to the peoples that Sparta had enslaved and exiled. The city was built on a grand scale surrounded massive city walls with fortified gates. It was a place of sanctuary, independence and freedom symbolised by the Dekterion where the citizens met to debate issues and hear poetry. The city also has a large temple area, theatre and stadium.

The Romans made a number of alterations including mosaics and self-flushing toilets.
